About Joshua A Fein, MD
My clinical practice focuses on caring for patients undergoing bone marrow transplantation and cellular therapies for leukemia and other diseases of the blood and bone marrow. I'm particularly interested in how we can use advanced data analysis and biomarker research to improve outcomes for transplant patients—making treatments safer, more effective, and more personalized. In the lab I am leading investigations of fundamental questions about immune system recovery after transplantation. Using techniques from systems immunology and computational biology, we study how a new immune system develops from donor stem cells. Our goal is to understand what factors lead to patients recovering strong immunity against infections and against recurrent cancer. This work translates directly to how we take care of our patients: for example, our studies of immune cell recovery patterns help us predict which patients may need additional support, while observations of unusual recovery patterns among patients lead to new laboratory questions. My goal is to bridge the gap between cutting-edge research and compassionate clinical care, ensuring that every patient benefits from the latest scientific advances while contributing to knowledge that will help future patients.
Joshua A. Fein, M.D., is an Assistant Professor of Medicine within the Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology at AVÑо¿Ëù and serves as the Chair of Quality Assurance and Director of Informatics for the Bone Marrow Transplant and Cellular Therapy Program and Assistant Attending physician at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Fein’s clinical interest is in caring for individuals undergoing stem cell transplantation to treat leukemia and other disease of the blood and bone marrow. Dr. Fein received his Bachelor of Music in 2008 from the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester, where he trained as an operatic baritone. He continued his musical training in Germany at the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe, where he received a Master of Singing degree in 2011. Upon returning to the United States, Dr. Fein’s focus shifted to pursuing medical training, and he obtained his medical degree from the American Program at Tel Aviv University in Israel. During his medical studies, Dr. Fein began to research hematopoietic cell transplantation under the mentorship of Profs. Roni Shouval and Arnon Nagler at Sheba Medical Center in Ramat Gan, Israel, leading to publications and international presentations, many in collaboration with the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation. He completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Connecticut and hematology/oncology fellowship at AVÑо¿Ëù/NewYork- Presbyterian. His research in the transplant field has led to over 30 publications in journals including first-author publications in the Journal of Clinical Oncology and The Lancet Haematology. He is the recipient of the prestigious Research Training Award for Fellows from the American Society of Hematology and, more recently, holds a KL2 award supporting his ongoing investigation of the recovery of a healthy immune system after undergoing donor stem cell transplantation.
